It’s a biological fact that we all start losing muscle mass as we age, even from as young as 30yrs old. That means if you enjoy sport and want to continue being active for as long as possible, it’s simply not enough to JUST do your sport - you need to work consistently to actively build balanced strength in your bones, joints, muscles and connective tissues.
As a tennis player and runner, I found this out the hard way with niggles and a grumpy lower back getting steadily worse and often putting me out of action as the years went by.
Having tried several different Pilates classes I found that many were catering for older clientele looking for a more gentle strength and mobility programme. What I was looking for was a more dynamic class to help me build the specific strength and stability I needed for my active lifestyle. But also a class that would provide individual guidance for my physical weaknesses. I couldn’t find one, so I decided to set up some of my own!
My sports-specific Pilates classes are designed for active mid-lifers, like me, who want to continue their sport and being active well into old age. My lesson plans focus on building strength, flexibility and, crucially, much-needed deep stability in and around your core and joints.
The result is improved performance, fewer injuries and a more general sense of strength and well-being in your everyday life.
Pilates has been a revelation for me. I feel so much stronger than I have for years and, now, if my body ever feels a bit cranky, Pilates is my go-to for pain relief. I’m excited to be sharing what I’ve learned with the local community.

I currently run classes for runners, triathletes, tennis players and golfers, all from Sidford Social Hall.
My classes are intended to be challenging (that’s how you progressively build strength) but no prior experience of Pilates is required and I always keep a watchful eye, providing adjustments and modifications as required so that you work at a level appropriate for you. Although my classes are mat-based Pilates classes, I use a lot of Pilates small equipment (stability balls, blocks, weighted balls, resistance bands, magic circles, foam rollers, sliders etc) to add to the challenge and create variety - and fun! Unlike most other private Pilates class providers, I provide all of this equipment - all you have to bring is yourself, a water bottle, and a positive attitude!

Racket sports and golf place a lot of rotational torsion and asymmetric load through the body. It’s common for tennis players and golfers to suffer muscle imbalances and sore joints, particularly through the shoulders and hips. Pilates is a highly effective way to build the resilience you need to keep striking the ball.
